FROM CLEVELAND · 45 minutes

Where you are going.

Vincent William sits on the south shore of Lake Erie in Madison, Ohio, about 45 minutes east of downtown Cleveland. The estate is a stone mansion with eight rooms upstairs, a restaurant and wine bar downstairs, a patio over the water, and a Cabernet Franc vineyard planted in 2020.

The land around it is the Grand River Valley, a wine appellation established in October 1983 across Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties. More than 1,300 acres of vines grow here, over 60 percent of Ohio’s grapes. The lake does the work: at about 40°F on May 1 it holds the vines back past the spring frosts, and at about 64°F on October 1 it keeps the first hard frost away through harvest.

Wine tours and rides

Getting around wine country.

The wineries of the Grand River Valley sit along OH-307 and the roads between Madison and Geneva, most within fifteen minutes of the inn. Three local companies handle the driving. Book directly with them, give them the inn’s address, and confirm your pickup and return times before you set out, especially on weekends and during harvest. Uber and Lyft reach Madison, but cars are scarce out here, so do not count on one for the ride home. For pickup at the inn, use 1300 Belleair Avenue, Madison, Ohio 44057.

Where to stay

Sleep where you tasted.

The inn upstairs.

Eight rooms sit above the restaurant, each with one king or queen bed, a private bath and its own view of the lake. Breakfast is cooked to order downstairs from 7 am, the heated pool and hot tub are for overnight guests, and Tracy, who manages the inn, will walk you through the house if you ask.

If we are full.

Weekends go first. When the eight rooms are taken, we send guests to The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake, about twenty minutes west on the same shoreline. It runs the valley’s daily wine shuttle, so you can still get to the wineries, and to us, without driving.

Friday to Sunday

Two nights, planned.

Friday: check in from 4 pm, a glass of the estate Cabernet Franc at the wine bar, then dinner downstairs or on the patio in season. Saturday: breakfast from 7, a shuttle out to three or four wineries, an hour on the Geneva-on-the-Lake strip, and back in time for dinner and the sunset over the water.

Sunday: brunch until 2, then a covered bridge or the Fairport Harbor lighthouse on the way home. Reserve dinner when you book the room; Saturday tables go early.
