Harpersfield grows premium wine grapes and does not apologize for making dry wine in a region known for sweet. The estate bottlings run to Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
The room is small, warm and wood-fired, with bread and cheese rather than a full kitchen. It rewards sitting still for an hour.
If you have been told Ohio cannot grow cool-climate vinifera, this is the stop that argues otherwise. The lake moderates the temperature here in a way that makes the whole valley possible.

Why does wine grow well here?
Lake Erie moderates the temperature of the Grand River Valley, holding off spring frost and extending the autumn. It is the reason this small pocket of Ohio grows around half the state's grapes.
