A place should feel like where it is
A lot of hospitality has become interchangeable: the same finishes, the same language, the same version of luxury whether the property is in Ohio or California. We are more interested in building something that belongs here.
That means Ohio wine rather than pretending to be Napa. Local farms rather than generic farm-to-table language. Lake Erie rather than imported coastal imagery. Reclaimed materials rather than a house furnished all at once.
The Grand River Valley is still underestimated
Wineries, farms, Lake Erie, fishing, small towns, Geneva-on-the-Lake and Ashtabula Harbor all sit within a relatively compact region. A lot of people still do not realize how much there is to do here. We think that is beginning to change.
Vincent William is meant to be part of that change, not a property separated from the region, but one more reason to spend time in it.
The property was completed slowly
The property had been standing unfinished for years when our family purchased it: the stone exterior, cedar and slate largely in place, much of the interior not. Finishing it took eight years, with the family handling much of the construction during COVID and local tradespeople doing the specialized work.
Where possible, the property was completed with reclaimed materials. The slate on the roof came from a Pennsylvania church. Stone and paving came from streets and university campuses in Ohio and Indiana. The house did not arrive finished, and that is part of why it feels the way it does today.
How we think about it
Hospitality is the harder part
The setting gives Vincent William an obvious advantage: Lake Erie outside the windows, the vineyard outside the door. But a beautiful property does not automatically become a good hospitality business.
People come here for birthdays, anniversaries, proposals and weekends away. The food has to be worth the trip, the rooms have to be cared for, and the people working here have to notice the people walking through the door.
The view gets attention. Hospitality determines whether someone comes back. In 2026, readers voted Vincent William among Cleveland’s best in four categories of Cleveland Magazine’s Best of Cleveland: Best Winery, Best Boutique Hotel, Best Patio and Hot Spot.
Beyond the Estate
Vincent William is only one part of the region
We want people to come to Vincent William. We also want them to leave the property.
Visit another winery. Spend an afternoon in Ashtabula Harbor. Go to Geneva-on-the-Lake. Fish. Shop. Eat somewhere else. Meet the people who live and work here.
