Our family spent eight years finishing this stone and slate mansion before opening it to guests in 2024. Today, the house brings together our boutique hotel, restaurant and wine bar, with Lake Erie beyond the north windows. For a Detroit wine weekend, northern Michigan is the usual pick, and Traverse City is roughly 260 miles away. Madison is about 215. The Grand River Valley, an appellation since 1983, grows cool-climate grapes such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc because Lake Erie extends the growing season. At Vincent William, the Riesling comes from Lake Erie fruit and the estate Cabernet Franc from one acre beside the house; the 2022 took Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. Other tasting rooms nearby include Debonne, Ferrante, Grand River Cellars and Laurello, and the wine bar at the inn welcomes walk-ins.

A stay worth planning around
Leave Detroit by 12:30 p.m. to reach check-in at 4. Two nights work well: arrive Friday, spend Saturday at tasting rooms with a driver, and have Sunday brunch before heading home. Check-out is at 11, when brunch starts, so pack first and come down to eat.
The Glass Pavilion, Toledo
The Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion, across Monroe Street from the main building, is a few minutes off I-75 before the I-280 turn. Admission is free. The Pavilion’s hot shop hosts glassblowing demonstrations; check times before you go. On the Turnpike, E-ZPass, cash and cards are all accepted.
Friday: at the inn by 4
A 12:30 departure from Detroit reaches Madison at about 4 p.m., the start of check-in. Before dinner, take a glass of the Lake Erie Riesling out to the private beach below the inn, or use the pool and hot tub, which inn guests can use May to November 1, weather permitting. Chef Jeff Gable’s Friday dinner is served until 9, with the meatballs and cannoli among the dishes on the menu.
Saturday: estate Riesling, then the harbor
Have breakfast at the inn, cooked to order between 8:30 and 10 with coffee and fresh juice, then drive to M Cellars on South River Road in Geneva, a family winery that grows its own grapes, Riesling among them. In the afternoon, continue east to Ashtabula Harbor, where the 1925 bascule lift bridge rises to let boats up the Ashtabula River and Bridge Street’s old storefronts hold shops and restaurants, including Rennick Meat Market in a former butcher shop. In summer, the Hubbard House Underground Railroad museum keeps limited weekend hours. Drive back for dinner.
Two rooms for a group from Detroit
A wine weekend often draws a second couple. Book two rooms at once: there are only eight, each with a private bath and a king or queen bed. The inn has no elevator, so give the first-floor Suite 101 to whoever would rather avoid stairs. Summer bookings need two nights, and Sunday check-out is at 11.

I-75 south to I-280 in Toledo, the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90) east to exit 142, then I-90 through Cleveland to the Route 528 exit. About 215 miles; the Turnpike is the only toll.

How far is Vincent William from Detroit?
About 215 miles, or 3 hours 15 minutes, by I-75 south to Toledo, the Ohio Turnpike east and I-90 through Cleveland. There is no border crossing and no time change. The Turnpike is the only toll road on the route, and it accepts E-ZPass, cash and cards.
Which nights is the restaurant open?
Wednesday to Sunday. Lunch and dinner run noon to 9 Wednesday through Saturday and 11 to 8 on Sunday, with brunch from 11 to 2. It is closed Monday and Tuesday, so a Detroit weekend should start on Friday at the latest. Meals and drinks are billed separately; only breakfast comes with the room.
Can we have Sunday brunch before driving back to Detroit?
Yes. Brunch runs Sunday from 11 to 2, and check-out is at 11, so check out, then eat downstairs. A 1 p.m. departure puts you back in Detroit around 4:15. Reserve brunch when you book the room, because the restaurant also serves guests who are not staying at the inn.
