Why stay with us
State College is ringed by ridges, and the nearest large lake is a long drive in any direction. Here the view is flat water to the horizon: a private beach below the inn, and Suite 205's rooftop patio above it. The wine is made on the property. The estate Cabernet Franc comes from one acre beside the inn, planted in 2020, picked by hand and aged 12 months in French oak. Riesling and Rosé use Lake Erie fruit; Chardonnay and Pinot Noir use Grand River Valley fruit. Walk-ins are welcome at the wine bar, and if you are staying upstairs, no one has to drive after dinner.

A stay worth planning around
Leave State College by 12:30 p.m. to check in at 4. Two nights, Thursday to Saturday, give you Friday for wineries or Headlands Beach and two dinners at the restaurant. In summer, two nights is required. Avoid arriving Monday or Tuesday, when the restaurant is closed.
A candy stop at the Ohio line
Sharon, Pennsylvania, sits on the Ohio line a few miles north of I-80, a short detour east of Route 11. Daffin’s Candies (496 E. State St.) has made chocolates there since 1949, and its Chocolate Kingdom room displays sculptures made of chocolate. Check the shop’s hours before you go. It is the last stop before the 48 toll-free miles of Route 11 north toward the lake.
Thursday, three and a half hours west
Leave State College at 12:30 and the 237 toll-free miles bring you to Madison for check-in at 4. The rooms are reached by stairs only, since the inn has no elevator, and each has a private bath. Before dinner, sit at the wine bar with a glass of the estate Cabernet Franc, then eat downstairs. Lunch, dinner and drinks are charged apart from the room.
Friday: two tasting rooms and a comparison
Use Friday to taste other Grand River Valley wines against the estate bottles from the night before. Breakfast is cooked to order from 8:30 to 10, and the standard menu, coffee and juice are included. Start at South River Vineyard on South River Road, whose tasting room is an 1892 Methodist church moved from Shalersville and reopened in 2002 with its original pews and stained glass. In the afternoon, go to Harpersfield Vineyard on Route 307, which makes only estate dry wines: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Franc. Order its Cabernet Franc to compare with the one grown beside the inn. Be back by 6 for dinner.
A queen room for a solo trip
If you are coming alone to drive the wine trail at your own pace, a queen room is enough space. Every room has one bed and a private bath, and the same breakfast is cooked to order for one. Check-out is at 11 a.m. In summer the stay must be two nights; the rest of the year one night is possible on open dates.

Getting here
Take I-99 and US 322 north to I-80, then I-80 west for 131 miles to the Ohio line, Ohio Route 11 north for 48 miles and I-90 west for 15. The route has no tolls and does not go through Erie.

I-80 west is most of it. From State College take I-99 and US 322 to I-80, drive 131 miles to the Ohio line, then take Ohio Route 11 north and I-90 west to Madison. It is 237 miles, about 3 hours 30 minutes, and none of it is tolled.
Is the pool open for a fall weekend?
Until November 1. The heated pool (80°F) and the hot tub are open to inn guests from May to November 1, weather permitting, so an October weekend can still include both. From November 2 until May they are closed, and the wine bar, the restaurant and the nearby tasting rooms carry the stay.
