A 325-mile, toll-free drive from Harrisburg on US 322 and I-80 ends at Vincent William: eight adults-only rooms and a winery restaurant on Lake Erie.
Vincent William is an adults-only inn with eight rooms above our restaurant and wine bar, in a stone and slate mansion that opened to guests in 2024, with Lake Erie beyond the north windows. Estate Cabernet Franc is grown, pressed and poured on the property; the 2022 vintage received Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. Read our story.
Worth the drive
Why stay with us
From Harrisburg this is close to five hours each way, so it makes sense as a three-night trip with two full days in Ohio. Use one for the Grand River Valley: Harpersfield Covered Bridge dates from 1868, and Smolen-Gulf Bridge in Ashtabula County is the longest covered bridge in the United States. Wineries such as Ferrante, Debonne and M Cellars are in the same valley. Spend the other day at the inn, on the private beach below the inn or at the pool and hot tub (May to November 1, weather permitting). For a long stay, Suite 205 is the room to ask for: a king bed and a private rooftop patio over the lake.

A stay worth planning around
Leave Harrisburg by 11 a.m. to reach the inn at 4. Three nights from Wednesday to Saturday give two full days between the drives, and the restaurant is open every one of those evenings. If you only have a weekend, arrive Friday and leave after Sunday brunch, which runs 11 to 2.
Old-growth forest off I-80
Cook Forest State Park in Cooksburg is north of I-80: leave at Exit 78 and follow PA 36 north to the park. Its Forest Cathedral, a stand of old white pine and hemlock, is a National Natural Landmark and one of the largest old-growth forests in Pennsylvania. Allow at least an hour for the detour and a short walk. There are no tolls on this route: I-80 across Pennsylvania, Ohio Route 11 and I-90 in Ohio are all free.
Wednesday, after five hours on I-80
A departure from Harrisburg at 11 gets you in for the 4 p.m. check-in with US 322, I-80 and Route 11 behind you. The inn has no elevator, so bring up only what you need for three nights; each room has a private bath. The restaurant is open Wednesday, and the wine bar takes walk-ins, so the first evening needs no planning beyond a table. Dinner, drinks and lunches out are billed separately from the room.
Thursday on the covered bridge roads
Ashtabula County has 19 covered bridges, and two of them fill a day. Breakfast, cooked to order from 8:30 to 10, comes with coffee, juice and the standard menu. Drive 15 minutes to Harpersfield Covered Bridge, which has crossed the Grand River since 1868, and stop for lunch in downtown Geneva on the way east. Then go to Smolen-Gulf Bridge over the Ashtabula River: at 613 feet it is the longest covered bridge in the United States, opened in 2008. For the other 17 bridges, get the driving map from the Ashtabula County visitors bureau. Return for dinner by 7.
Suite 206 for an anniversary
Three nights is long enough to mark an occasion, and Suite 206 suits one: a king bed and an in-room Jacuzzi, so a soak does not depend on the weather or the pool season. Mention the anniversary when you book. Check-out on Saturday is at 11 a.m., which puts you back in Harrisburg by late afternoon.
Look at Suite 206, read the Smolen-Gulf Bridge guide, and book dinner for all three evenings before you leave Harrisburg.

The drive
Getting here
Take US 22/322 west along the Juniata River to the State College area, then I-80 west for 131 miles into Ohio, Ohio Route 11 north for 48 miles and I-90 west to Madison. None of it is tolled, so the Pennsylvania Turnpike stays out of the trip.
Set your destination to 1300 Belleair Avenue, Madison, Ohio. Check current navigation before leaving and allow for traffic and stops. Once here, your room, the restaurant and the wine bar are on the same property.
Good to know
Common questions
How long is the drive from Harrisburg, and are there tolls?
It is 325 miles and about 4 hours 45 minutes, without tolls. Take US 22/322 west to I-80, stay on I-80 for 131 miles into Ohio, then take Route 11 north and I-90 west. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is slower for this trip and adds tolls.
When is the Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival?
It is held on the second full weekend in October; in 2026 that is Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11. The festival office is in Jefferson, and activities spread across bridge sites in the county, with the most around Harpersfield and Smolen-Gulf. Rooms at an eight-room inn go quickly that weekend, so book early.
How many nights should we book from Harrisburg?
At least two, and three if you can. With nearly ten hours of round-trip driving, one night leaves only an evening and a breakfast. Arrive Wednesday through Saturday so the restaurant is open, since it closes Monday and Tuesday. In summer there is a two-night minimum; the rest of the year one-night stays are possible on open dates.
