Buffalo sits at the eastern end of the Lake Erie AVA, the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies, which runs through New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Most of its 40,000-plus acres of vines are Concord, and you drive past them in Chautauqua County. Madison is near the Ohio end of the same AVA, and the wines here lean toward European varieties. The estate Cabernet Franc grows on one acre beside the inn; Riesling and Rosé come from Lake Erie grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Grand River Valley. The inn has eight adults-only rooms with a private beach below, and the restaurant is downstairs.

A stay worth planning around
Leave Buffalo by 1:30 p.m. to check in at 4. A Friday arrival gives you Saturday for Grand River Valley tasting rooms with a driver from GoGeneva or Sunset Taxi, and Sunday brunch from 11 to 2 before heading back. Summer stays need two nights. The restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday.
A Westfield winery on Route 20
Johnson Estate Winery (8419 West Main Rd., Route 20, Westfield) opened in 1961 and is the oldest estate winery in New York, making its wines from its own 115-acre vineyard. The tasting room is open daily 10 to 6 from March through October, with shorter hours Sunday to Thursday in winter. Tolls end a few miles on, where the Thruway reaches the Pennsylvania line at Ripley.
Friday on the Thruway and I-90
Out of Buffalo by 1:30, past the Concord vineyards of Chautauqua County, and you reach Madison for the 4 p.m. check-in. Rooms are up the stairs, as there is no elevator, and each has a private bath. Before dinner, use the pool or hot tub, open to inn guests from May to November 1, weather permitting, or go down to the private beach. The wine bar pours estate and local wines, cocktails and Irish whiskeys, and the kitchen serves until 9 on Fridays.
Saturday: from Concord to vinifera
Saturday shows what the Ohio end of the Lake Erie AVA does with European grapes. Start at Debonne Vineyards, where the Debevc family farms more than 175 acres; its list runs from dry Riesling and Chardonnay to the sweet Ohio labels the region built its name on, so you can taste both ends in one flight. Have lunch from its wood-fired kitchen. In the afternoon, drive to Harpersfield Vineyard on Route 307, which grows vinifera for estate dry wines: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Plan to leave by 6:30 for dinner at the inn.
Suite 205 for a summer weekend
Between May and October, Suite 205 is the room to ask for: a king bed and a private rooftop patio over Lake Erie, the lake Buffalo sits on at the other end. Summer weekends require two nights, which fits a Friday-to-Sunday plan. Check-out is at 11 a.m. on Sunday, the same hour brunch opens downstairs.

Getting here
Stay on I-90 the whole way: the Thruway through Chautauqua County to the Pennsylvania line at Ripley, then past Erie and into Ohio. The Thruway south of Buffalo is tolled (E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail); I-90 in Pennsylvania and Ohio is free.
Set your destination to 1300 Belleair Avenue, Madison, Ohio. Check current navigation before leaving and allow for traffic and stops. Once here, your room, the restaurant and the wine bar are on the same property.

Common questions
How is the wine here different from what we taste in Chautauqua County?
Both are in the Lake Erie AVA, but the Chautauqua side is mostly Concord. Vincent William grows Cabernet Franc on the estate, hand-picked and aged 12 months in French oak; the 2022 took Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. Riesling, Rosé, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir use Lake Erie and Grand River Valley fruit.
Is breakfast included with the room?
Yes. Breakfast is cooked to order from 8:30 to 10 each morning from a standard menu, with coffee and fresh juice included. Lunch, dinner and drinks from the wine bar are paid separately. On Sunday the restaurant serves brunch from 11 to 2, which can take the place of lunch before the drive back to Buffalo.
Can we take Route 5 along the lake instead of the Thruway?
Yes. New York Route 5 follows the Lake Erie shore for about 50 miles from Buffalo to the Pennsylvania line at Ripley, and it has no tolls. It is slower than the Thruway, with towns and traffic lights. Rejoin I-90 at the Pennsylvania line or in Erie for the rest of the drive into Ohio.
