Ann Arbor to Madison, Ohio, is about 213 miles by US-23 and the Ohio Turnpike. Eight adults-only rooms at a winery, near the 3,600-acre Holden Arboretum.
Our family spent eight years finishing this stone and slate mansion before opening it to guests in 2024. Today, the house brings together our boutique hotel, restaurant and wine bar, with Lake Erie beyond the north windows. Estate Cabernet Franc is grown, pressed and poured on the property; the 2022 vintage received Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. Read our story.

Nichols Arboretum, the Arb, covers 123 acres in Ann Arbor. The Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, west of Madison in Lake County, covers more than 3,600 acres, with over 20 miles of trails and a collection of about 9,400 kinds of woody plants. A stay worth planning around
Leave Ann Arbor by 12:30 p.m. for the 4 p.m. check-in, or by 10:30 a.m. with a stop at the West Side Market. Book two nights so Holden gets a full morning. The restaurant closes Monday and Tuesday, so arrive between Wednesday and Saturday.
West Side Market, Cleveland
I-90 runs through Cleveland on the way to Madison, and the West Side Market at West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue in Ohio City is a short detour. The market hall opened in 1912 under a 137-foot clock tower, with stands selling meat, cheese, bread and produce. It is closed on some weekdays, so check the hours before you go. The Ohio Turnpike, from near Toledo to exit 142, is the only toll.
Arriving midweek or Friday from Ann Arbor
Leave Ann Arbor at 12:30 and you reach the inn at about 4 p.m., when check-in begins; on your last morning, check-out is 11. Spend the first hour at the pool or hot tub, open to inn guests from May to November 1, weather permitting, or on the private beach. The wine bar welcomes walk-ins, and dinner, served from the family’s Italian and Irish recipes, is on a separate bill from the room.
Holden in the morning, the bluffs in the afternoon
Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 10, cooked to order from a standard menu with coffee and fresh juice included. Leave by 10 for Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, closed Mondays. From April to October, the Murch Canopy Walk runs 500 feet at 65 feet above the forest floor, and the Kalberer Emergent Tower climbs 120 feet; allow about two hours for both. In the afternoon, drive back east to Lake Erie Bluffs in Perry, 670 acres with 40-foot bluffs, 9,000 feet of shoreline and a 50-foot observation tower. Return for dinner.
Suite 205 after a day outdoors
After a day on trails, Suite 205 gives you a private rooftop patio over the lake for the evening, with a king bed and its own bath. It is upstairs; there is no elevator, so if stairs are hard, choose Suite 101 on the first floor. Two nights are required in summer, and that also gives Holden a full morning.
See Suite 205, read our Holden Arboretum guide for trail hours, and reserve dinner for the evening you get back from Kirtland.

The drive
Getting here
US-23 south into Ohio to the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90) near Toledo, east to exit 142, then I-90 through Cleveland to the Route 528 exit. About 213 miles; the Turnpike is the only toll.
Set your destination to 1300 Belleair Avenue, Madison, Ohio. Check current navigation before leaving and allow for traffic and stops. Once here, your room, the restaurant and the wine bar are on the same property.
Good to know
Common questions
How far is the Holden Arboretum from the inn?
Holden is in Kirtland, in the western part of Lake County, a short drive west of Madison. It covers more than 3,600 acres, including 2,000 acres of forest and wetland, with over 20 miles of trails. Check its hours before you go, and plan a morning there so you are back for lunch or dinner at the inn.
Is there good birding near Madison?
Yes. Two Lake Metroparks sites close to the inn are stops on Ohio's Lake Erie Birding Trail. Arcola Creek Park in Madison protects a natural estuary where rails and sparrows stop in migration. Lake Erie Bluffs in Perry has a 50-foot observation tower, and bald eagles are seen there regularly.
Which rooms have a bath for two?
Suite 206 has a king bed and an in-room Jacuzzi. Suite 101, on the first floor, has a clawfoot tub and a steam shower, and it avoids the stairs, since the inn has no elevator. Suite 205 has a private rooftop patio over the lake instead. All eight rooms have private baths.
