From Toronto, cross at the Peace Bridge and take I-90 to Madison, Ohio: eight adults-only rooms on Lake Erie, estate wine and breakfast cooked to order.

Vincent William is an adults-only inn with eight rooms above our restaurant and wine bar, in a stone and slate mansion that opened to guests in 2024, with Lake Erie beyond the north windows. Estate Cabernet Franc is grown, pressed and poured on the property; the 2022 vintage received Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. Read our story.

Why stay with us

From Buffalo, I-90 follows the south shore of Lake Erie through the Lake Erie AVA, a federally recognized grape-growing area established in 1983 that covers the shoreline of New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Vincent William is at the Ohio end, inside the smaller Grand River Valley AVA. The estate grows one acre of Cabernet Franc beside the inn, hand-picked and aged 12 months in French oak; the 2022 took Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. Michael and Katy Profeta opened the stone mansion in 2024 as an inn with eight adults-only rooms. After four hours and a border crossing, Suite 205 is the room to ask for: a king bed and a private rooftop patio over the lake.

A stay worth planning around

Book three nights and arrive between Wednesday and Saturday so the restaurant is open on your first evening. Leaving downtown Toronto by 11 a.m. reaches the 4 p.m. check-in with time left for the border. Two full days in Ohio also puts you past the 48-hour mark that Canada uses for its larger duty-free allowance on the way home.

Presque Isle, in Erie

Erie, Pennsylvania is the last city on I-90 before the Ohio line, and Presque Isle State Park is its sand peninsula on the lake, with beaches and a 13-mile loop road. The Tom Ridge Environmental Center at the park entrance has free exhibits and a glass-enclosed tower, open daily 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from April through October. For the return, the Peace Bridge charges its toll only in the Canada-bound direction, and the Thruway bills by E-ZPass or by mail to the plate’s owner.

Arriving from the border on a Wednesday or Thursday

After the Peace Bridge and four hours of I-90, check in from 4 p.m. and carry the bags up yourselves: the inn has no elevator, and every room has its own private bath. Between May and November 1, weather permitting, the heated pool and hot tub are open to inn guests before dinner. The restaurant serves until 9 Wednesday to Saturday. Dinner and wine bar drinks are charged to you separately from the room.

Two Madison wineries and a lake morning

Breakfast is served 8:30 to 10: order anything on the standard menu, cooked for you, with coffee and fresh juice included. Spend the rest of the morning on the private beach below the inn. At noon, take a GoGeneva or Sunset Taxi ride to Debonné Vineyards on Doty Road, the largest family-owned estate winery in Ohio with more than 175 acres of vines. Grand River Cellars, on South Madison Road, is a short ride further and serves lunch with its wines. Come back by 6 and order the estate Cabernet Franc at dinner to compare it with what you tasted that afternoon.

Two couples driving down together

If another couple is sharing the car from Toronto, book Suites 205 and 206 for the same dates. Both have king beds on the upper floor. Suite 205 has the private rooftop patio over the lake, and Suite 206 has an in-room Jacuzzi. Summer stays need two nights, and check-out on the last morning is 11 a.m., so time the drive home from there.

Before you leave Toronto, read about Suite 205 and Suite 206, then book dinner for the first night so the table is held when you arrive from the border.

The drive

Getting here

Gardiner Expressway to the QEW, around the lake to Fort Erie and over the Peace Bridge into Buffalo, then I-190 and I-90 west through New York and Pennsylvania to exit 212 in Madison: 253 miles (about 407 km). The New York Thruway section of I-90 past Buffalo is tolled electronically, and there is no time change.

Set your destination to 1300 Belleair Avenue, Madison, Ohio. Check current navigation before leaving and allow for traffic and stops. Once here, your room, the restaurant and the wine bar are on the same property.

Good to know

Common questions

Can we bring wine from Ohio back to Toronto duty-free?

Yes, within limits. After 48 hours or more outside Canada, each adult of legal drinking age (19 in Ontario) can bring back up to 1.5 litres of wine, which is two 750 mL bottles, free of duty and taxes. The wine has to travel with you. Anything above that allowance is charged duty, taxes and provincial levies.

Which Grand River Valley wineries are open on a weekday?

Some are, but tasting-room hours change by season and several close early in the week, so check each winery's site before planning a Monday or Tuesday. The Vincent William restaurant is also closed Monday and Tuesday, so plan a three-night stay with those days at the edges.

Is there a NEXUS lane at the Peace Bridge?

Yes, in both directions. Lane hours vary, so check the Peace Bridge Authority site before you leave. Without NEXUS, Canadian citizens need a valid passport or an enhanced driver's licence to enter the US by land.
