Pittsburgh has three rivers downtown, and the nearest Great Lakes shoreline is about two hours north. At Vincent William there is a private beach below the inn, and every room has a view of Lake Erie. The drive is short enough to leave work at 5:30 on a Friday and sit down to dinner before 8, since the kitchen serves until 9 Wednesday to Saturday. Dinner, the wine bar and your room are in the same stone house, so nobody drives again that night. Suite 205 has a private rooftop patio over the lake. The estate Cabernet Franc grows on one acre beside the inn, and the 2022 vintage took Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition.

A stay worth planning around
Leave Pittsburgh by 1:45 p.m. to arrive for the 4 p.m. check-in. Two nights from Friday give you dinner twice and Sunday brunch (11 to 2) before the drive home; in summer, two nights is the minimum anyway. Avoid a Sunday-to-Tuesday stay, because the restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday.
A garden stop in Youngstown
I-680 passes the north end of Mill Creek Park in Youngstown, where Fellows Riverside Gardens (123 McKinley Ave.) has 12 acres of display beds and a rose garden. Admission is free and the gardens are open daily, so a half-hour walk fits between the Turnpike and the 48 miles of Route 11. On tolls: the Pennsylvania Turnpike has no cash lanes and charges by E-ZPass or Toll By Plate, and the Ohio Turnpike charges for the few miles from the state line to the I-680 exit. Route 11 and I-90 are free.
Friday evening after the Turnpike
Leaving Pittsburgh at 1:45 puts you at the door for the 4 p.m. check-in, with Route 11 and I-90 behind you. Carry bags up yourselves: the inn has no elevator, and every room has its own private bath. Before dinner there is time to walk down to the private beach or sit in the hot tub. Chef Jeff Gable’s kitchen cooks dinner downstairs, and the wine bar pours estate wines and Irish whiskeys. Dinner, drinks and Saturday’s lunch are paid separately from the room.
Saturday on the Lake County shore
Breakfast is cooked to order from 8:30 to 10; the standard menu, coffee and fresh juice come with the room. Then drive 25 minutes west to Headlands Beach State Park, a mile of natural sand, and walk east through the Headlands Dunes preserve toward the 1925 Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light. Eat lunch in Fairport Harbor village behind the beach. In the late afternoon, drive to Lake Erie Bluffs in Perry, where a 50-foot tower gives a 360-degree view over the water and bald eagles are often seen. Park at 2901 Clark Road for the shortest walk to the tower. The inn is about 20 minutes east, in time for a 7:30 table.
Two couples, two rooms
Each room has one king or queen bed, so two couples driving up from Pittsburgh together need two rooms. Suite 205 and Suite 206 make a good pair: one has a private rooftop patio over the lake, the other an in-room Jacuzzi, and the four of you can decide who gets which. Book both at once. The two-night minimum applies only in summer.

Take I-279 and I-79 north to the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) west into Ohio, exit onto I-680 through Youngstown, then follow Ohio Route 11 north for 48 miles and I-90 west for the last 15. The route does not go through Erie.

What is the fastest way to drive from Pittsburgh to Madison, Ohio?
Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike west to Youngstown, I-680 north, then Ohio Route 11 north to I-90 west. It is 141 miles and about 2 hours 15 minutes. Going north on I-79 through Erie looks direct on a map but is longer. Expect tolls on both the Pennsylvania and Ohio turnpikes.
Can we swim at the inn?
Yes, in season. Inn guests can use the heated pool (80°F) and the hot tub from May to November 1, weather permitting, and there is a private beach below the inn. For a longer stretch of sand, Headlands Beach State Park is 25 minutes west, with a mile of natural beach.
Can we do a one-night trip from Pittsburgh?
Yes, outside summer, when one-night stays are available on open dates; summer has a two-night minimum. Arrive Wednesday through Saturday so the restaurant is open. Check in at 4, have dinner and a glass at the wine bar, and breakfast is cooked to order from 8:30 to 10. Check-out is at 11 a.m., which gets you home in the early afternoon.
