By 1860 Cincinnati was the center of the national wine trade, built on the Catawba grapes Nicholas Longworth planted along the Ohio River. Catawba is still among the varieties grown in the Grand River Valley, the appellation around Madison that was recognized in 1983. At Vincent William, the estate grows one acre of Cabernet Franc beside the inn, planted in 2020, hand-picked and aged 12 months in French oak; the 2022 took Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. The Riesling and Rosé start with Lake Erie fruit, and the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with Grand River Valley fruit. Upstairs, the eight rooms have private baths and a king or queen bed, and a private beach sits below the inn.

A stay worth planning around
Leave Cincinnati by 11 a.m. to reach Madison when check-in opens at 4 p.m.; a stop at Fort Ancient adds about two hours. Book three nights, Thursday to Sunday, for two full days here. A Sunday arrival leaves Monday and Tuesday without the restaurant, so plan those meals elsewhere.
Fort Ancient, off I-71
Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve (6123 State Route 350, Oregonia) is a short detour from I-71 in Warren County. Its 2,000-year-old hilltop enclosure, the largest in North America, is one of eight sites in the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, which became Ohio’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. The museum and grounds open Wednesday to Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday noon to 5, with last admission at 4. There are no tolls on I-71, I-271 or I-90 between Cincinnati and Madison.
Thursday: check in at 4, dinner by the lake
Leave Cincinnati at 11 and you reach Madison on Thursday close to 4 p.m., when check-in opens; on Sunday, check-out is at 11 a.m. After four hours on I-71, walk down to the private beach below the inn, or use the heated pool and hot tub, open to inn guests May to November 1, weather permitting. The wine bar takes walk-ins before dinner. Chef Jeff Gable cooks from the family’s Italian and Irish tables, with dishes such as the meatballs under whipped ricotta.
Friday: Catawba at Debonné, bread from a brick hearth
Breakfast is cooked to order between 8:30 and 10 from a standard menu, and coffee and fresh juice come with it. Afterward, drive to Debonné Vineyards on Doty Road in Madison. Anton Debevc, who came from Slovenia, bought a fruit farm there in 1916, and his son and grandson began making wine commercially in 1971. The winery still bottles Catawba, the grape behind Cincinnati’s 19th-century wine trade. In the afternoon, go to Harpersfield Vineyard on Route 307 in Geneva, which has a wood-fired brick hearth. It keeps weekend-focused hours, so check before you go. Be back by 7 for dinner.
Suite 206 for three nights
Three nights calls for a room with a bath worth using each evening. Suite 206 has a king bed and an in-room Jacuzzi in addition to its private bath. It is on an upper floor, and the inn has no elevator, so pack a bag you can carry up the stairs. The two-night minimum applies in summer only; a Thursday-to-Sunday booking meets it in any season.

How long is the drive from Cincinnati to Madison, Ohio?
About 4 hours 15 minutes and roughly 290 miles, almost all of it on I-71. Columbus comes after about 110 miles if you want to stop for lunch. There are no toll roads on the route. Check-in opens at 4 p.m. and check-out is at 11 a.m., so a late-morning departure from Cincinnati lines up with your room being ready.
Is Vincent William adults only?
Yes. All eight rooms are booked for adults, and each has a private bath and one king or queen bed. The room rate includes breakfast from the standard menu. Lunch, dinner and wine bar orders are paid for separately, and the restaurant downstairs also serves diners who are not staying at the inn, Wednesday to Sunday.
Can we visit other Grand River Valley wineries without driving?
Yes. GoGeneva, Sunset Taxi and The Lodge wine shuttle are the local ride partners for getting between wineries. Nearby tasting rooms include M Cellars, South River Vineyard, Debonne, Ferrante and Laurello. Check each winery's hours before you book a ride, and be back for dinner: the restaurant serves until 9 Wednesday to Saturday and until 8 on Sunday.
