The claim that Lake Erie is the walleye capital of the world is not a slogan, and the central basin off Geneva and Ashtabula is where a good deal of that fishing happens. Charters run out of Geneva State Park Marina and the ports at Ashtabula and Conneaut.
June and July are the dependable months. Warming water sets up a thermocline that concentrates fish offshore, and trophy walleye over eight pounds are common enough that nobody is surprised. Yellow perch, smallmouth bass, channel catfish and summer steelhead fill out the rest of the season.
Boats leave early. A ten-minute drive to the dock is a considerably better arrangement than most people fishing this lake have.
