The Grand River Valley, Explained

Lake Erie helps explain why Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc grow in Northeast Ohio. The water changes how quickly nearby vineyards warm in spring and cool in autumn.

Where the Grand River Valley is

The Grand River Valley is a federally recognized American Viticultural Area covering parts of Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties along Lake Erie’s southern shore, about 45 minutes east of downtown Cleveland. The TTB establishment list dates the AVA to October 21, 1983. For wine labeled with an AVA name, federal rules require at least 85 percent to come from grapes grown within that area, along with other finishing requirements.

How the lake affects the vines

Water warms and cools more slowly than land. Lake Erie is the shallowest Great Lake, with an average depth of about 62 feet, according to the EPA. Cool lake air can delay spring growth, reducing exposure to early warm spells followed by frost. In autumn, heat stored in the water can delay the first killing frost near the shoreline and give grapes more time to ripen.

The National Weather Service’s 1981–2010 averages off Cleveland show 47°F on May 1 and 66°F on October 1. These are historical water temperatures at that observation location, not measurements at our vineyard or a forecast for a particular harvest. Conditions differ along the shore and from year to year.

How many wineries are here?

The Grand River Valley regional winery website, checked in September 2026, lists 31 wineries and more than 1,300 vineyard acres, and estimates that over 60 percent of Ohio’s grapes grow in the valley. Those are the organization’s regional figures; they are not a census of wineries within the legal AVA boundary.

The wines we make in Madison

Our Riesling and Rosé begin with Lake Erie fruit. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir come from Grand River Valley growers. Our estate Cabernet Franc is grown, hand-harvested and pressed on this property, then aged twelve months in French oak. The 2022 vintage received Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition.
