The Strip at Geneva-on-the-Lake
10 min drive
Ohio's first summer resort: a mile of arcades, custard and neon, ten minutes east.
Geneva-on-the-Lake has been a summer resort since the 1860s, which makes it the oldest in Ohio, and The Strip is the mile of Lake Road that has carried it ever since. Arcades, mini golf, custard, bars with the doors open, and a great deal of neon after dark.
The Boardwalk arcade has been running since 1947 and still has Fascination, a hybrid of skee-ball and bingo played on rolling boards that dates to 1918 and survives in very few places anywhere. Madsen Donuts and Eddie's Grill are institutions in the literal sense: same families, same recipes, decades on.
It is loud, unfashionable and completely itself. Most of it runs Memorial Day to Labor Day; the shoulder weeks are quieter and half the shutters are down.
From the innkeepers
