Ashtabula River Steelhead
25 min drive
The wade-fisher's river: it clears first after rain and takes less pressure than the big water.
The Ashtabula is smaller than the Grand and behaves accordingly. It drops and clears faster after a storm, which makes it the river to check when everything else is the color of chocolate milk, and it sees noticeably less angling pressure than the larger tributaries.
The water below the Riverview covered bridge is the classic run. This is walk-in, wade-and-swing fishing rather than boat work: a pair of chest waders, a spey or a single-hander, and a willingness to move.
Twenty-five minutes east, and close enough to Bridge Street that you can be eating properly forty minutes after you get out of the river.
