Syracuse to Madison, Ohio is 299 miles on the Thruway. Plan two or three nights at an adults-only Lake Erie winery inn with a restaurant and breakfast.
Vincent William is an adults-only inn with eight rooms above our restaurant and wine bar, in a stone and slate mansion that opened to guests in 2024, with Lake Erie beyond the north windows. Estate Cabernet Franc is grown, pressed and poured on the property; the 2022 vintage received Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. Read our story.
Worth the drive
Why stay with us
At 299 miles, this is one road nearly the whole way, and once you arrive you do not need the car again that evening: the restaurant, wine bar and rooms are in the same house. If you fish the Salmon River at Pulaski, the Grand River near the inn has its own steelhead run from about October to May, and our nearby guide covers where to fish it. For time at the inn, there is a private beach below the inn, a hot tub, and Suite 206 with an in-room Jacuzzi. Breakfast is cooked to order from 8:30 to 10, with coffee and fresh juice included.

A stay worth planning around
Leave Syracuse by 11:30 a.m. to arrive at 4. With nine hours of round-trip driving, book three nights, Wednesday to Saturday, so every evening falls on a night the restaurant is open and you have two full days in Ohio. If you can only do two nights, arrive Thursday.
A winery stop in Portland, New York
21 Brix Winery (6654 West Main Rd., Route 20, Portland) sits between Brocton and Westfield in Chautauqua County, with a porch over its vineyards and a cherry orchard. The tasting room is open daily 10 to 6 and serves cheese boards and small plates, so it works as a lunch stop about 1 hour 45 minutes before the inn. Tolls end when the Thruway reaches Pennsylvania at Ripley.
Wednesday, the long day on I-90
An 11:30 departure covers the 299 miles and has you at the door when check-in opens at 4. After four and a half hours in the car, go to the hot tub, open to inn guests from May to November 1, weather permitting. The restaurant is open on Wednesday, so dinner is downstairs and nobody drives again. Lunch, dinner and drinks go on a separate bill from the room.
Thursday on the Grand River
If you fish the Salmon River, bring the same rods. The Grand River has more than 50 miles of fishable water from the lake up to the dam at Harpersfield, and it is the Steelhead Alley river best suited to a drift boat, so book a guide for the morning. Anyone 16 or older needs an Ohio fishing license. Breakfast starts at 8:30, cooked to order from the standard menu with coffee and juice, or skip it for an early launch. If rain has muddied the Grand, drive 25 minutes east to the Ashtabula River, which clears faster and suits wading. Come back in the afternoon for a shower and dinner.
Two anglers, two rooms
Every room has a single king or queen bed, so two friends fishing together should book two rooms. Put whoever carries the gear in Suite 101 on the first floor. On a three-night stay, check-out is at 11 a.m. Saturday. Summer requires two nights, but the steelhead months fall outside summer, when one night is also allowed.
Read our Grand River steelhead guide, compare all eight rooms for a two-room booking, and reserve dinner for your first night in from Syracuse.

The drive
Getting here
Take I-690 west to the Thruway (I-90), then stay on it past Rochester and Buffalo and along Lake Erie to the Pennsylvania line, continuing on I-90 through Erie into Ohio. The Thruway is tolled (E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail) except around Buffalo; I-90 in Pennsylvania and Ohio is free.
Set your destination to 1300 Belleair Avenue, Madison, Ohio. Check current navigation before leaving and allow for traffic and stops. Once here, your room, the restaurant and the wine bar are on the same property.
Good to know
Common questions
Is Madison, Ohio too far from Syracuse for a weekend?
It is 299 miles, about 4 hours 30 minutes each way, so a two-night weekend leaves one full day in Ohio. Arrive Thursday or Friday, when the restaurant is open until 9. Three nights, Wednesday to Saturday, gives two full days, and in summer two nights is the minimum anyway.
Is there an elevator at the inn?
No, the inn has stairs only. Suite 101 is on the first floor, with a clawfoot tub and a steam shower, so ask for it if carrying bags or waders up a flight is a problem. Every room, upstairs or down, has a private bath and one king or queen bed.
When does the Grand River steelhead run start?
Steelhead begin running the lower Grand River in the fall, and the Ohio Division of Wildlife stocks the river each year, so fishing holds up from about October to May. Rain and snowmelt can blow the river out for a week or more, so check conditions before you drive. The inn is in Madison, near the river's lower reaches.
