Why food matters to us.

We are a family that spent eight years finishing this house so we could feed people in it. We cook the way our two families ate, one Italian and one Irish: good meat, sauce, bread, something green, plenty of it. We buy from farms nearby because the food tastes better, and we make the wine ourselves. If you come once, we hope you come back.

The kitchen

The menu changes because the farms do.

Jeff Gable runs the kitchen a few steps from the dining room. The meatballs are Nonna’s recipe and the tiramisu is made here. When the Rainbow Farms tomatoes stop, the BLT pasta comes off the menu and something else takes its place. That is the whole idea.

The growers

Three farms you will see on the menu

Three farms the kitchen calls every week, and three families we are glad to know.

01

Beef

Bonner Farms, Garrettsville.

The Bonners grow the feed, raise the Angus, do the butchering and dry-age every cut for 14 days, with no added hormones or antibiotics. Our double smash burger is two of their patties.

02

Produce

Rainbow Farms, Madison.

Larry and Tina Klco have farmed Townline Road since 1983, forty-odd crops and greenhouses for the shoulder seasons. Their cherry tomatoes are the reason the BLT pasta is on the menu.

03

Fruit

West Orchards, Perry.

Five generations of Wests on the same ridge since 1891. The lake keeps the frost off the blossom, so peaches grow here that have no business growing this far north. When theirs come in, ours do.

WHY PEOPLE COME

Lake Erie in the window.

The room faces north over the water, with a fire at one end. The wine was grown and pressed here, and the honey, microgreens and salumi come from a few miles down the road. In summer, book 7:30 and you get the sunset with dessert.

Why here

Most guests come for the view. We want them to remember the food.

Most of our guests drive out from Cleveland, Pittsburgh or Columbus, and many have never heard of the Grand River Valley. The same lake that ripens our Cabernet Franc kept two hundred nurseries and orchards on this ridge in the 1950s. Northeast Ohio grows serious food, and we would like dinner here to be the proof.

Brunch runs Sundays until 2, and the patio is open Memorial Day through October. If you are curious where anything came from, ask. Your server will know.
