Winter 1920: A Prohibition Speakeasy

When Prohibition began in January 1920, Lake Erie became one of the most important, and most dangerous, routes for smuggled spirits. Rumrunners crossed open water and hidden coves after dark, supplying the Midwest while the country officially went dry.

Winter 1920 is our Wednesday-night speakeasy in the cellar, and it runs all winter.

Downstairs under the dining room: stone walls, painted murals, candlelight, and one long table. A featured chef menu, and a cocktail list built from recipes of the era.

Lake Erie: the quiet liquor highway

While the headlines went to Chicago and New York, Lake Erie ran a different trade. A long shoreline, weather that changes in an hour, and winter ice made it useful. Boats ran without lights and changed routes nightly. In the coldest months drivers crossed frozen stretches by truck and sled, guided by moonlight and memory. One wrong move meant going through the ice.

The cellar was the original hiding place

In those years a cellar was not storage. Bottles went behind false walls, doors were disguised, candles replaced lamps, and conversation stayed low. What mattered was trust, timing and the room itself.

Ours borrows the feeling: dim light, close tables, and the sense of a room you have to know about to find.

Cocktails that outlasted the dry years

A lot of the classics were born or refined under Prohibition. Rough spirits needed citrus, bitters and technique to carry them. Those drinks were built to work, not to impress.
