Plan a Grand River Valley winery day trip on our free map: 31 wineries, ten planned routes, filters for food and patios, and Google Maps directions.
Guests ask us the same question most weekends: which wineries should we go to? The Grand River Valley and the towns around it have more than 30 wineries, and they are very different from one another. Some pour sweet and fruit wines, some make dry reds, some have a full kitchen, and one pours in a 1930s racehorse stable.
So we built a free map of the Grand River Valley wineries that you can plan a day on. It covers 31 wineries, has ten day trips we have already planned, and sends your finished route to Google Maps. It works in a phone's browser, with no app and no account.
What's on the map
31 winery guides. Each winery has its own page that says what a visit is like: whether there is food, where you sit, what they pour, and the practical details. Browse all 31.
Ten day trips. Each one is a set of stops in a sensible driving order, with its own page and a live map:
Day trip | What it's for | Driving |
|---|---|---|
The six wineries our guests tell us about most, as a loop from Madison | About 65 min | |
Dry reds: Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Dornfelder and a Meritage blend | About 35 min | |
Riesling, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner and Sémillon | About 85 min | |
A horse barn with a fireplace, a patio in the woods, a church moved from another town | About 35 min | |
Every stop also pours beer, cider, cocktails, mead or bourbon | About 60 min | |
Five wineries rated 4.6 or higher on Google, none with more than 135 reviews | About 35 min | |
Five wineries 13 to 30 miles out, including a meadery and a 1930s racehorse stable | About 1 hr 45 min | |
Six wineries at their best in October | About 55 min | |
A boardwalk over the Grand River, an 1868 covered bridge and wineries in between | About 1 hr | |
Three covered bridges, a Lake Erie observation tower and a state park | About 2 hr |
Driving times are road estimates for the whole route, not counting time at each stop.
Filters. You can narrow the list by town, by distance, or by what you want from the visit. The filters include food, patio, live music, lakefront, overnight stays, dogs outside, fireplace, picnic spots, ice wine, sparkling wine, cider, mead and brewery.
How to plan your own route
Open the winery route map. Start from one of the day trips, or start a new route.
Add wineries from the list. Use the filters to find ones with food, a patio or whatever matters to your group.
Move stops up or down to change the order, and choose a round trip if you want to end where you started.
Tap View route to see the day on the map, one stop at a time.
Send the whole route to Google Maps for turn-by-turn directions, with every stop included.
Your stops are saved in the page link, so you can copy it and send it to whoever is coming with you.
Planning the day
You don't have to visit every stop. Each day trip has five to seven. Choose the two or three that suit your group and remove the rest.
Check hours before you go. Several wineries in the valley change their hours by season, and some are closed early in the week.
Decide who is driving, or don't drive. Our getting around guide lists local taxis and wine-tour shuttles that will take you between stops.
Plan where the day ends. Most of our day trips finish at Vincent William, on the lake in Madison. You can book a table for dinner, or stay the night in one of our eight adults-only rooms, with breakfast cooked to order in the morning.
For our own notes on each winery, with an afternoon route and a weekend itinerary, read The Best Wineries in the Grand River Valley. If you are spending time by the lake as well, see Things to Do in Geneva-on-the-Lake.
