Wheeling to Madison, Ohio: 163 miles with no tolls, up Route 7 and Route 11, to an adults-only winery inn on Lake Erie with eight rooms and a restaurant.
Our family spent eight years finishing this stone and slate mansion before opening it to guests in 2024. Today, the house brings together our boutique hotel, restaurant and wine bar, with Lake Erie beyond the north windows. Estate Cabernet Franc is grown, pressed and poured on the property; the 2022 vintage received Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. Read our story.
Worth the drive
Why stay with us
Wheeling sits on the Ohio River, and the drive north follows that river for its first stretch before Route 11 turns inland at East Liverpool. The water at the other end is Lake Erie, wide enough that the far shore is out of sight, with a private beach below the inn. Dinner comes from Executive Chef Jeff Gable's kitchen, which buys from West Orchards in Perry, Bonner Farms in Garrettsville and Rainbow Farms in Madison, and the menu draws on the family's Italian and Irish roots. The wine bar pours estate and local wines, cocktails and Irish whiskeys, and walk-ins are welcome. Book a queen room for a simple night, or Suite 206 for its in-room Jacuzzi.

A stay worth planning around
Leave Wheeling by 1:30 p.m. for the 4 p.m. check-in, or by noon if you want an hour in East Liverpool. Two nights from Wednesday or Thursday give you a full day between drives, with the restaurant open every evening. Spend it at Harpersfield Covered Bridge (1868) and a winery or two, then come back for dinner.
Pottery and a mill near East Liverpool
Route 7 runs through East Liverpool, which once made more than half of the country’s ceramics. The Museum of Ceramics, in the 1909 post office at 400 E. 5th St., shows pottery made in the city, including the largest public display of Lotus Ware. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9 to 3:30, and closes from late December through March. Beaver Creek State Park, outside town, has Gaston’s Mill (1837), a restored water mill that grinds flour in season.
A Wednesday arrival from the Ohio River
Leave Wheeling at 1:30 and the 163 toll-free miles bring you to Madison around 4, when check-in opens. The pool, heated to 80°F, and the hot tub are open to inn guests from May to November 1, weather permitting, which is a good way to spend the hour after Route 11. The kitchen serves until 9 Wednesday through Saturday, so dinner can wait. At the wine bar, try the Riesling from Lake Erie grapes and the Chardonnay from Grand River Valley fruit.
Thursday along the Grand River
You followed the Ohio River north; spend the next day on the Grand. Breakfast is cooked to order from 8:30 to 10 from the standard menu, with coffee and juice included. Then drive 15 minutes to Harpersfield Covered Bridge, a 228-foot crossing from 1868 with a riverside park where you can sit by the water. Ferrante Winery & Ristorante is a few minutes away on North River Road; the Ferrante family has made wine since 1937, and lunch there is Italian. In the afternoon, go to Laurello Vineyards on Route 307, a small family winery (check its hours), then drive back to the inn for dinner.
Suite 101 keeps you off the stairs
The house has no elevator. If anyone in your party has trouble with steps, ask for Suite 101, which is on the first floor and has a clawfoot tub and a steam shower as well as its private bath. Request it by name when you book. Check-out is at 11 a.m., and summer stays carry a two-night minimum.
Read about Suite 101, see our Harpersfield Covered Bridge guide, and reserve a table for the night you arrive from Wheeling.

Good to know
Common questions
Are there tolls between Wheeling and Madison, Ohio?
No. The fastest route uses Ohio Route 7, US 30, Ohio Route 11 and the last 15 miles of I-90, and none of them is tolled. You do not need E-ZPass. The drive is 163 miles and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.
Can we bring our children?
No. The inn is for adults only: eight rooms, each with a private bath and one king or queen bed, so it suits couples and friends travelling without kids. The restaurant downstairs is open to the public for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday, and meals and drinks there are paid for separately from the room.
Which other wineries can we visit from the inn?
The Grand River Valley has several tasting rooms near Madison, including Ferrante, Debonne, Harpersfield Vineyard, Laurello and Grand River Cellars. Check each one's hours before you go. For rides between them, use GoGeneva, Sunset Taxi or The Lodge wine shuttle, so nobody in your group has to drive after tasting.
