Columbus to Madison is 183 miles, nearly all on I-71. Eight adults-only rooms at a Lake Erie winery, a private beach below and Headlands Beach nearby.
Our family spent eight years finishing this stone and slate mansion before opening it to guests in 2024. Today, the house brings together our boutique hotel, restaurant and wine bar, with Lake Erie beyond the north windows. Estate Cabernet Franc is grown, pressed and poured on the property; the 2022 vintage received Double Gold at the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition. Read our story.
Worth the drive
Why stay with us
At 2 hours 45 minutes, Columbus is close enough for a one- or two-night stay built around Lake Erie. A private beach sits below the inn, and Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor has the longest natural beach in Ohio. From May to November 1, weather permitting, inn guests have a heated pool (80°F) and hot tub. Evenings can stay on the property: the restaurant serves lunch and dinner Wednesday to Sunday, and the wine bar pours estate wines, including a Riesling made from Lake Erie grapes, along with cocktails and Irish whiskeys. Walk-ins are welcome at the bar.

A stay worth planning around
Leave Columbus at 1 p.m. on a Friday and you reach Madison around the 4 p.m. check-in, with time for the pool before dinner. In summer the two-night minimum applies, so book Friday and Saturday. Outside summer, a single Wednesday or Thursday night is possible on open dates.
Mansfield, on the way up I-71
The Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, used for most of the filming of The Shawshank Redemption (1994), is a short detour from I-71, which passes Mansfield about halfway between Columbus and Cleveland. The prison opened in 1896 and closed in 1990. Self-guided tours run 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from April through October, and Thursday to Sunday from November through March. The whole drive uses free interstates.
Friday: from I-71 to the pool
A 1 p.m. start from Columbus gets you to Madison around 4, when check-in opens. From May to November 1, weather permitting, the heated pool (80°F) and hot tub are open to inn guests, so there is time for a swim before dinner. Dinner runs until 9 on Friday, with stone-fired flatbreads and corn-crusted walleye on the menu. Meals and drinks are charged separately from the room, and Sunday check-out is at 11.
Saturday at Fairport Harbor
After breakfast, which is cooked to order from 8:30 to 10 with coffee and fresh juice included, drive west to Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park. Its sand beach is shallow, lifeguards cover the swimming area in summer, and the rental stand has kayaks and paddleboards. At noon, walk up to the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse on Second Street, open seasonally (check the days before you go). The tower has 69 narrow, open steps to an outdoor deck, and closed-toe shoes are required. Drive back in mid-afternoon for the private beach below the inn, then dinner.
Suite 101 after a beach day
Suite 101 is on the first floor, which matters on a beach weekend: wet towels, coolers and bags do not have to go up a staircase, and the inn has no elevator. It has a clawfoot tub and a steam shower for rinsing off sand. Like every room, its bath is private. In summer, remember the two-night minimum when you choose your dates.
Book Suite 101, read the things to do nearby for more of the shoreline, and reserve dinner for both nights.

Most do not. Ohio state parks have no entrance fee, so Headlands Beach and Geneva State Park are free. Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park, run by Lake Metroparks, may charge a fee in season and has lifeguards in summer. Inn guests can also use the private beach below the inn at no charge.
Can we leave Columbus after work on Friday?
