The Best Wineries in the Grand River Valley

A good wine-country day leaves time to sit down. Start with the kind of visit you want: a vineyard stop, a picnic, a full meal or a night on Lake Erie. These are our suggestions from Vincent William, the winery, restaurant and eight-room adults-only inn in Madison.

Madison, Geneva and Geneva-on-the-Lake are different places. Many wineries with Geneva mailing addresses sit inland around Harpersfield; Geneva-on-the-Lake is the lakefront village. Check the actual address when planning your route.

Vincent William Wine

1300 Belleair Avenue, Madison. Our estate Cabernet Franc is grown, pressed and poured here. Order tasting glasses and talk with our team about the wines, then sit down to lunch or dinner. Chef Jeff Gable’s kitchen buys from Ohio farms, with fresh pasta dishes, flatbreads and other seasonal choices on the menu.

The South River Road stops

M Cellars

6193 South River Road West, Geneva. Estate-grown wines, a vineyard-facing patio and a tasting room with a fireplace. Its menu includes cheese, charcuterie and other small bites. Groups of nine or more must register ahead; registration does not reserve a table. Check M Cellars’ visitor information.

South River Vineyard

6062 South River Road West, Geneva. The tasting room occupies a former church, with outdoor seating looking over the vines. It is a useful picnic stop: the winery permits outside food and offers a bread-and-cheese plate rather than a full kitchen menu. Tables are first come, first served. Cask 307

7259 Warner Road, Madison. On Route 307, with a delicatessen serving charcuterie and cheese alongside contemporary wine styles. A practical choice for a lighter stop between wineries. See Cask 307’s menu and calendar.

Laurentia Vineyard & Winery

4599 South Madison Road, Madison. Choose Laurentia for wine with boards, shared plates and stone-baked flatbreads. Its food menu changes with the season, so check the current selection before choosing it as your meal stop. See Laurentia’s dining menus.

Ferrante Winery & Ristorante

5585 State Route 307, Geneva. An Italian restaurant and winery where a meal can be the main stop of the afternoon. Restaurant hours differ from tasting-room hours, and the winery says it does not accept reservations. Check Ferrante’s dining hours.

Baci Winery

7800 Warner Road, Madison. Wine with a lunch and dinner menu that includes small plates and pizza. Check kitchen hours separately: Baci lists its kitchen as closing before the winery. See Baci’s current food menu.

Hundley Cellars

6451 North River Road West, Geneva. A food-and-wine stop with a regularly changing menu. Use the published menu as a guide and confirm what is being served for your visit. See Hundley’s food information.

Debonné Vineyards

Debonné combines an estate winery, food and Double Wing Brewing in Madison. Its range of wines makes it useful for a group with different preferences. Parties of ten or more must arrange their visit in advance. Plan a Debonné visit.

Farther east: Buccia Vineyards

Buccia is in Conneaut, so treat it as a separate outing along the Lake Erie shore rather than part of a compact Madison–Geneva loop. Its winery has guest suites with kitchenettes. Check Buccia’s stay information.

An afternoon in wine country

• Start with M Cellars or South River Vineyard on South River Road. Choose one or two stops so the afternoon stays relaxed.

• Add a break at Harpersfield Covered Bridge if you want time outdoors between visits.

• Finish at Vincent William for dinner on Lake Erie. Reserve your table separately and leave time for the drive back to Madison.

Make a weekend of it

• Friday: check in from 4 p.m. and have dinner here. Order tasting glasses at the wine bar and ask our team about the wines.

• Saturday: enjoy included inn breakfast from 8:30 to 10, then choose a few winery stops. Return for dinner or spend the evening by the lake.

• Sunday: have breakfast before the 11 a.m. checkout, or book public brunch separately if you want to stay for a later meal.

Breakfast’s standard menu, coffee and juice are included for overnight guests; dinner, drinks and public brunch are additional. Pool and shared outdoor hot-tub access is for registered, checked-in inn guests, May through November, weather permitting.
